September 2025 – Pool Update
Monday 1 Sep, 2025
HI, August has been a busy month for tournaments, with one on each weekend so far.
The Alan Cowan Memorial had 180 players from over most of the South Island crammed into the Papanui Club Bowling Section Hall for the first weekend of the 10th anniversary tournament. Hornby’s’ John Gower played particularly well to make it into the Tier 1 semifinals to fall to the eventual winner Shayden Mckenzie. Leo Tafu got to the Quarter finals of Tier 2.
The following week saw the Papanui Men’s Masters tournament, celebrate its 30th Anniversary. Tony Gumley got to the semi’s before falling to the tournament winner Malcolm Pollock, who was in devastating form. The trophy final was fought out between two Hornby players, Davy Donohoe and Ricky Bell. Davy took home the trophy.
Last week was the Canterbury Open Pairs and Canterbury Ladies Pairs, held concurrently in the Papanui Bowling Hall. It was our second home this month with the third consecutive tournament at the venue. Congratulations to Sherralee Boyce and Gina Grimwood winning the Ladies, with Aileen Barnes and Liz Hullen losing in the semis as well. A good Hornby showing!
The Open Pairs saw John Gower, who is having a good run of form, and Shane Stuart into the quarters while Barry Henderson and Paul Morris were the losing pair in the Flight Final. Hornby’s Luke Arnold and Craig Roberts took home the Trophy.
Interclub is halfway through the second round, and the Div 3 Hornby Black are looking fairly unassailable in first place on their part of the ladder.
Both Hornby Div two teams, Green and Diamondz are either in the top 6 or close to it.
Div One Hornby Silver looks to be cementing its place in third on their ladder and Premier Hornby Gold are chasing down the 6th placed team from seventh to make the playoffs. It going to be tight finishes all-round by the looks of it.
