September 2025 – Cards Update

Hi to all Hornby Club Members and Families. Spring’s just around the corner, and with it, many of the usual card activities continue.

Just to recap on last month, on 31 July, we held our End of Month Pairs Night, with 15 tables and 60 players. The winners were Cheryl Gianelly and Bernie McKenzie on 20pts.

We have started our current games of Aggregate Play over 6 weeks. The winner on week one: 44 players- John Churchill on 21 pts. Week two: Winner -Vivienne Eveleigh on 20 pts. Dave Luke was lucky to get dealt the perfect hand in Diamonds as shown in photo. Week three: 43 players: We had a four-way tie for first on 19 pts Bruce McIntosh, Ross Ranger, Maurice Adler and Lorraine Cole. The last aggregate night will be held on 18th Sept.

The All Sports held the ‘Alan Cole” Euchre Tournament on 3rd Aug. Games of Euchre only, against other sections. We had three card teams of 10 participating during the afternoon. The winning team was Crib team on 23pts, (with most being card section members as well). Then on second equal was the Alan Cole Family Team and Cards 2 Team half point behind on 22 1/2 pts and next was the other card 1 team on 19 1/2 pts. A great afternoon with much humour, played in memory of the late Alan Cole (past President Cards Section many years ago).

Over the last month our Card Section has continued and finished off the 15 weeks of Saturday Interclub Euchre/Crib Tournament involving 26 players each week. That will quieten down quite a few of us on Saturday mornings, not coming to the club prior to catch the bus to an away Christchurch club or play in the Glassworks Room.

Helen James and I would like to thank everyone who made themselves available and played with enthusiasm and good sportsmanship and our supporters who came with us also. We did not get to reach the finals like last year, but that is cards sometimes! We had many games losing just one off. Kaiapoi and Cashmere will take it from here to play for the Interclub Shield Trophy. We also thank Bentley Coachlines for providing their driver and bus to transport us over the number of weeks. We have appreciated their prompt and reliable service.

On 16th Aug, we had nine players travel to Weymouth Club, Manurewa to play in the Clubs NZ National Singles Championship. There were 33 clubs represented from over NZ, with just on 256 players. This was a well-run tournament, with everyone playing 36 games on the Saturday and 27 games on Sunday. For the second year running, Hornby won the Singles Plate Runner Up Trophy. Cheryl Gianelly won it this year. Congrats Cheryl!

We are still finishing first section games of our winter Tournament, our inhouse games played in the main bar, we are waiting for next draws of opposition to play. Our Monday Games of ‘500 ‘ are being enjoyed by those attending. Our numbers have been 15-19 over last three weeks. It starts at 1pm, finishes at 3.30pm, with a cuppa and biscuit. You are more than welcome to come along and try it out, every Monday.

On Sunday 24th we held our 6 Handed Euchre Tournament, open to all clubs. We had a good turnout with 11 ½ tables including Ashburton RSA and Timaru MSA. It was an enjoyable afternoon for everyone. We had a Hornby Team get first equal, on 17 pt, who shared in the prize money.
