September 2023 – Cards Update

Friday 1 Sep, 2023

Hi to all members,

Coming into September, and into Spring weather can only get better. I am looking forward to sunny days, no cold wind.

Just to recap on our Card Section activities since the August magazine came out.

We are now into the second set of “Aggregate Games”, over six weeks of play, getting to most consistent player with highest total score over this time.

Week 1: Winner Tom Rae, 2nd place John Churchill,

Week 2: We had 40 players, 10 tables on the night and the winner was Paul Bulmer, 2nd equal: Diane Findlay and Sharyn Smith.

Same night, We also had John Churchill getting the ‘Perfect Hand’ in Diamonds. In his hand, left and right bow, Ace, King and Queen and able to play it. He received the running weekly cash jackpot that had accumulated for many weeks prior.

Week 3: Winner was Jimmy Patu, 2nd Lyn McKay. And to add to that same night another ‘Perfect Hand’, won by Marleen Troon, in Black Spades.

Winter Tournament Games, we have now drawn for our next round of games, between the last six pairs. All will be played shortly. I will advise next month.

We had a team of 10 members travel to Porirua Wellington on the weekend of 19-20 August to the Annual Clubs NZ National Singles Championships. There were 260 players represented from 32 clubs from all over NZ. Porirua Club have to be congratulated for hosting a great two-day tournament. They had a great bunch of volunteer helpers and their hospitality, entertainment each night, meals, and organised airport, and motel transfers every day made such an enjoyable tournament.

We played 36 games on the Saturday, points counted, to determine if you make the Championship Section, or the Plate division, then everyone played another 27 games on the Sunday. It is a full-on weekend playing euchre/cards. Sadly, no winning trophies came back to Hornby this year.

We have our Annual Bus Trip away on September 23, leaving the Club at 10.30 am. We will be going firstly to lunch at Crate & Barrell in Leeston for lunch and then travel through to Ashburton MSA to play cards with their members. The cost is $45 and includes a two-course lunch meal and bus. Names and payment required.

We have made a change to our Annual three handed tournament, which has normally been played on a Saturday. We have a trophy to be presented to the winner with the winner’s name to go on our Card Section Honours Board upstairs. We are to now play this special tournament on Thursday 19 October. We will advise further details. This will be a chance for many more Hornby members to play on a single night, rather than a Saturday.

We have just played our semifinal for the Saturday Interclub Tournament after 15 weeks of play, because of four clubs being first equal on the last day of play. Hornby played New Brighton Club, and Kaiapoi played Papanui in the Semis, with Hornby and Kaiapoi, becoming outright winners. The final is to be played next week Saturday 2 September. So next month, I will be able to advise who the winners were for 2023.

Hornby have just hosted our six handed tournament on Sun 27 August. It was open to all members from any club. We had a good turnout with 11 tables, 66 players, playing 14 games. There was a close finish of games, with our own Hornby members, winning on 19 pts. Well done to Terry McCallum, Rowdy Houghton and Possum(Graham) Jackson. On 18 pts was Helen James, Anne Hepburn and Bev Bulmer.

That covers our full-on month of activities.

As always, Card Section members please look on our Card Section Notice Board for all information regarding our section activities. It is located under the stairs on the right, as you go into the Legends Bar.

Until next month.
