October 2025 – Cards Update

Thursday 2 Oct, 2025

Hi to all Hornby Club members, section members and families. So now we are into October, getting closer to the end of another busy and rewarding year.

A quick recap on August. We had our End of Month Pairs night with 15 tables, 60 players. Great turnout. We decided to treat our members with a half time supper, which was warmly received. The winners on 16 pts were Nicci Pohatu and Michi Irie, with two other pairs close on 15pts.

We are continuing with our Aggregate Play over 6 weeks.

Week Four: 47 players, winner Anne Hepburn on 22 pts, 2nd was Jackie Cartwright on 19pts.

Week Five: 44 players, Winner Bernie McKenzie on 20pts, 2nd was Lorraine Cole on 19 pts.

Week Six: 48 players, Winner Tony Bakhos on 19pts, 2nd Paul McOscar on 18 pts.

Also, within the last 3 weeks, we have had two members achieve the elusive ‘Perfect Hand “, on successive weeks. I am proud to say one Perfect Hand was mine, and the other one was dealt to Allan Shears. All in the luck of the Cards. The weekly cash jackpot hasn’t had time to build up in-between.

With the completion of six weeks of Aggregate Play, the final overall results were announced. Congratulations to the top performers with their consistency and to all members for their enthusiasm throughout.

Winner Bruce McIntosh on 83pts, and three members all 2nd equal on 78 pts, Jackie Cartwright, John Churchill, Bill Turei.

Our in- house Euchre Winter Tournament is down to the last stages, with just a few pairs trying to get to finals stage. The Shield Trophy will be presented at our Xmas Breakup.

Monday is our section’s “ 500 “ games and they are really starting to pick up with the numbers of members coming along. It starts at 1pm and finishes at 3.30pm, with a cuppa and biscuits.

We have a team entered to play in the “ Clubs NZ 500 South Island Tournament “ on the 12th of October at Kaiapoi Club. This is new to Hornby Club, as participants, but our team will be competitive.

To finish off our card/euchre activities for September, we had our End of Month Pairs Night and played for our special “Owen Bright Trophy”. Owen was a long- standing member of our section and other club sections for many years but certainly loved his cards. His family presented a cup, to play in memory of Owen, which we do each year. We played Pairs and used Accumulated Scoring.
