October 2023 – Cards Update

Monday 2 Oct, 2023

Hello again to all members,

We are now into October and getting closer to Christmas, as we keep getting told!

To recap on our Card Section activities from the last month. We have completed the second set of Aggregate Games, over the last six weeks of play. The last few weekly winners for week four was Marina Coles, week five, was John Churchil and Warren Grimwood tied 1st equal, and week six was Maurice Adler.

We can now advise the overall winners for the Aggregate six weeks of play. Congratulations to John Churchil,1st on 82 pts, Sharyn Robb, 2nd on 77 pts and Paul Bulman, 3rd on 74 pts. Well done to all those close in scores as well.

We have finally finished our 15+ games of Interclub Saturday cards (9 Euchre and 4 Crib Pairs), which started back at end of April. After making it through to the extra semifinals, we then played in the final against Kaiapoi on 2 September. We sadly lost this final. Could only say, we didn’t get the cards!!! So, we have no large Championship Shield to go in our trophy cabinet, but we did earn the runner-up trophy, as shown in photos, taken after the final with most of our team players.

On behalf of Helen James and myself, who organise this team week after week, we would like to thank all our section members, who were part of our 26 members required in team each week. Also, to those that filled in, when needed, and our other regulars that came as runners, to get refreshments for any of our players during the games. Finally,

I would like to thank Shane Keating, from the NZ Touring Bus Company, who provided his luxury bus and drivers, for our eight away games to other clubs. We appreciate his great service and reliability.

So, until April next year, that competition is over. The presentation of trophies is to be held at Kaiapoi to the Championship Shield Winners on Saturday 18 November.

On Sat 23 September, we had a bus trip organised with 39 members, travelling firstly to the Crate and Barrell, a Leeston restaurant. We had a choice of a two course meal, which was absolutely awesome, enjoyed by all.

After lunch, we continued on to Ashburton MSA , many members to play cards with other Ashburton card section members, or some enjoyed the club’s in-house hospitality, watching races, and playing some friendly games of pool amongst ourselves.

After 12 games of Euchre, approx. 10 tables, our member, Mary Churchil, finished on 19pts, the first equal with an Ashburton member. Well done. The card players finished off with Afternoon Tea.

Coming up on Thursday 28 September we have our end-of-month pairs night, in which we will be playing for the “Owen Bright Trophy”, and the scoring is based on a different accumulated scoring basis. We will finish off with supper. I will update results next month. Owen Bright was a past Hornby Club and Card section member, his family arranged a Cup Trophy to the Card Section in his memory, prior to his passing away. His daughter Sandra presented the inaugural Cup trophy last year. There are still a few card section members that remember Owen and enjoy this night in his memory.

So, what’s happening in October…

Friday 6 October, some members will be playing in the Allsports organised “Dick Bain Trophy”, Dick was a loyal, special, card section member for many years known by many members. These nights are always enjoyed by those that participated.

Thursday 12 October, we have a compulsory pick up night, something a bit different.

Thursday 19 October, we are playing the Annual 3 Handed Tournament. This has normally been played on a Saturday afternoon every year up till now, but due to dwindling numbers, we have decided it will be a Thursday night game. Some do find these games a bit of a challenge as it is different to normal playing pairs. We also have a trophy to be presented to the winner, and their name will go on the Honours Board. Come along and play.

Thursday 26 October, it will be a normal end-of-month pairs night, enjoyed by all, we get good numbers for these nights.

Just a reminder to all card section members, mark on your calendars Thursday 7 December. It will be our final HAMPER NIGHT and End of YEAR SUPPER.

During the week, all our notices are on our Card Section Notice Board, before you go through to Main Legend Bar, on the right under the stairs. Use this to keep up to date with what’s happening.

That’s all till next month

Lorraine Cole
