November 2025 – Cards Update

Monday 3 Nov, 2025

Hi to all section members, Hornby Club members and families.

November has arrived, bringing with it the vibrant pulse of Christchurch Show Week, with the traditional special racing and trotting days that have always been a part of Canterbury. Our club will be promoting the special days as well.

Back to our Card Section, we started off the
month with a normal progressive night of Euchre. We had 12 full tables, 44 players. Top points of 22 went to Russell Reekie, and 2nd on 20 pts was Betty Van der Werf. Well done, high scoring!

Our next Thursday night was “Compulsory Make” (by the dealer, if need be). Getting euchred was quite common on the night. We had 44 players, with top points to Derek Shearer on 19 pts and Lyn McKay on 18 pts.

On Thursday, 16th October, we had our special “3-Handed Tournament”. This has always been a prime tournament, previously played on a weekend day, but has been brought into our Thursday night programme. The winner’s name will go up on the Honours Board in the Event Centre upstairs, along with every previously played tournament over the years.

Our winner on the night was Jimmy Patu on 19 pts, congrats to you! Anne Hepburn was runner-up on 17 pts. Also on the night, we had another perfect hand by Lyn McKay.

We had two teams playing in the All Sports Dick Bain Trophy, and wish to congratulate our Cards 2 team for winning the awesome memorial trophy, presented on the night by his son, Sam Bain.

We also managed to get a photo of many of our Card Section players playing in various teams on the night.

We had our Hornby 500 team of 8 go to the Clubs NZ 500 South Island Tournament at Kaiapoi.

There were 80 players participating in this well-organised tournament. We continue to get more numbers to our weekly afternoons of 500 on Mondays at 1pm. If anyone is interested, come along and see.

Coming up on the last Thursday night is our regular end-of-month pairs. No doubt we will get a great turnout for this night. I will report results next month.

A reminder: we will have our Hamper Night on Thursday, 4th December to finish off our year’s activities. More details will be out during the month prior.
