May 2025 – Cards Update
Thursday 1 May, 2025
Hi to everyone. Here we are into the colder months of May. However, it is not putting off our members coming to play Euchre on our Thursday Club nights.
To recap last month, On Thursday 27th March, it was our End of Month Pairs Night. We had 54 players. The winners were Bruce McIntosh and Murray Bennie on 18pts, with others closely behind on 17 and 16pts. A fun night, with the usual atmosphere, of people enjoying playing with their set partner all night.
On Thursday 3rd April, it was just our normal progressive night of euchre, with the usual 12 games.
On Thursday 10th, we held another Accumulated Scoring night with 42 players. Each player’s score added to the running total, making a final total for each player. The winner on the night was John Churchill on 84 pts, and Diane Findlay and Murray Bennie, second equal on 83 pts.
On 17th April, we held our Annual General Meeting, with 48 in attendance. We had no change of Election of Officers, from last year. Our Chairperson is Cheryl Gianelly, Vice Chairperson is Helen James, Secretary is Jackie Cartwright, and Treasurer is Bernie McKenzie. The Committee, also same as last year, Lorraine Cole, Gwen Kirk, Allan Shears, Margaret Delaney and Mary Nash. We thank Bev Smith who did not put forward her name for the Committee this time. It was unanimously passed that our yearly affiliation fee (subs) be increased to $15, with increase to $20, if not paid before 31st May 25. After the meeting, we had a great supper and then there was time for members to make up their own combinations for friendly games of cards.
On Thursday 24th, we will our usual End of Month Pairs Night again, these Thursdays sure seem to come so quickly, which I will report on next month. When this magazine report is printed, we would have had our first Saturday Cards Interclub Tournament on Sat 26th April. The first week of 15 games to play. If anyone would like to play either Euchre or Crib, in the team on Saturday afternoons or help us to fill in, please let Helen or myself know. Either home or away games, but we all must travel on our bus for our away games. I will update next month on our first three games played as well.
To finish off, we look forward to any new members, that wish to come and join our card nights and be part of our Card Section. Knowing the concept of playing the game would be appreciated. You must be a member of the Hornby Club. Feel free to come along and try a couple of nights, with us if you wish too. We start at 7pm, reporting 6.50pm sharp, down in the Glassworks Room, through the Main Restaurant every Thursday Night. We are all finished between 9.15/ 9.30 pm. The cost to play is $4.00 per person, with payouts for top three scores each night. There are also raffles to purchase to give funds back to our section. We have a written programme for all 2025, covering each week of activities, so members know what is on each week. We have had new members join this year already, and they are enjoying being part of the section. Please think about it, if you may be interested.
