March 2025 – Cards Update
Saturday 1 Mar, 2025
Welcome back members to our March newsletter. We are now into our weekly section activities.
Just to recap, back on our first night of cards on Thurs Feb 13th, we had a fun night of Housie and Euchre. We had awesome turnout of 58 players, playing five games of Housie and seven games of Euchre. Most members enjoyed the challenge of quick thinking of dabbing of numbers on the Housie Sheets and kept up. There were lucky prizes for numerous lines and houses. We then played two games of Progressive Euchre, prior to stopping for lovely supper at 8.15pm. we restarted back after supper and played another five games euchre.
The winners of the Euchre Games were Caren Gillett and Gavin Dunn, both on 12pts, receiving payout for their winnings. An enjoyable fun friendly night and it was great to have four new members come along for their first night. We finished by 9.30pm.
On Thursday 20th February, it was our first normal progressive euchre night. We played our normal 12 games of euchre. We had 50 members playing, and great to see our new four from last week come back with one bringing another new friend as well. At half time, we had our usual tea/coffee & biscuits and sit down and catchup amongst members for 10 minutes or so. The winners on the night were Gina Howden-Winter, & Dave Luke on 20 pts, with Derek Shearer on 19 pts. Good scores.!! They received the normal payout prizes on the night.
Thursday 27th February, will be our end of month Pairs night, we play together as Pairs for the whole night. It is always a fun night and enjoyed by all. I will be able to report on this night with photos in next month’s magazine.
Saturday Interclub EUCHRE/CRIB 2025 starts on Saturday 26th April.
I would just like to give a wee bit of background on our Saturday Cards Interclub Tournament that our Card Section members have been playing for every year since 1988, over the last 36 years. The original shield that is still presented every year to a winning club, was played amongst the original clubs in 1902, Christchurch, Richmond, Kaiapoi & Sydenham. New Brighton joined in 1955, Riccarton 1959, Woolston, Hoon Hay, Papanui in the 1960s, and Hornby in 1988. Obviously, Clubs have come and gone over the many years, with changes in the game formations over the years as well. But since 1992, when rules were last set, we play today the same combinations, that being, 9 Pairs of Euchre (18 Players) and 4 Pairs of Crib (8 players). Total of 26 payers each week playing Interclub.
The number of teams playing and number of rounds has recently changed over the last 3-4 years. There are now just six local chch clubs, and we play three rounds each, so that equates to 15 weeks of play, clubs playing on home and away basis and one extra round. Our Hornby Team always travel by bus to our away games.
I have our names of our regular players that play from year to year, but if other members wish to be part of the team, or even wish to fill in the odd game, please let either Helen James or myself know.
You must have an updated Hornby Club Shirt with new Hornby Logo. You also must be a member of the Cards/Euchre section, with Subs cost being decided at our AGM on 17th April. Playing time for the games are for two hours to the clock, between 1pm and 3pm, on the Saturday afternoon.
If you would like more info on Sat Interclub Games participation, please see Lorraine or Helen, on a Thursday Euchre night. I will have copies of the Draw available on Thursday nights. Showing a wee bit of history, is the photo attached, our Hornby Team, winning the Shield back in 2010,
Just to finish off, we have various activities coming up, each Thursday night in March ie, Accumulative Scoring Points, six Handed night, and End of Month Pairs night. Please make sure you get a programme, on a Thursday night, to keep up to date.
On Sunday 9th March, we have a team of eight players in the Clubs NZ , Steinlager Cup Trophy, Euchre Pairs, being hosted at Richmond Club. This year should be approx 15 teams participating.
Thats all for this month. As usual, we look forward to any new members joining our friendly fun section.
