Our Cards section activities have now started for 2024. We will continue every week for the next 10 months up till December, with our weekly Thursday Euchre Club nights and other activities.

Our Opening Card night, back on 1st February, was a fun night for members just to get back together socially, and for any new prospective members wishing to come and be part of the section. We played eight games of very relaxed Bingo/ Housie for the first hour. The winners of the house received a $15 club voucher and a line of big cake chocolate.

We had nine tables, and 36 players on the night, which was good for a first night back. It was great to see so many members from last year, and loyal members from previous years that keep coming back each night.

We have since had three normal progressive nights of play, on our Thursday Club nights. The first week we had 14 tables and 56 players. The second week, we had 50 players and the third 47 players. We have also had eight new members come along to play for the first time over these nights, which was great to see.

On Thursday 29 February, it is our end-of-month pairs night, where you play with the same partner all night. Everyone enjoys these nights, and we always get a good turnout each time.

Our Hornby Card Section are holding the “36th South Island Euchre Pairs Tournament” on Sunday 10 March, upstairs in the Events Centre. We have 14 teams registered. We will be playing 36 games during the day between 9am till 4.30pm. After this, we will have a presentation of trophies to the top winning pair and top winning team. The last time we hosted this tournament was back in 2000. Over the last few months, there has been lots going on in anticipation for the running of this tournament. We appreciate those that have willingly put their names down, to help on the day.

Any card member who wishes to come and play euchre on the day before Saturday 9 are welcome. Some visiting clubs from around the South Island might come to play. Report at 12.30pm with play at 1pm. On Thursday 7 and 14 March, we will have our usual progressive nights.

On Thursday 21 March, we play for the “Eric Pycroft Trophy”, based on Men’s vs Ladies. Just come along, progressive, no need to sort partners, we will explain on the night. Ladies, we won last year!

Before finishing off, it’s great to have new members coming to join our section nights, but can we please ask, that our regular members, be mindful, and maybe slow down the play, if need be, we want everyone to enjoy.

And as always, Our Card Section noticeboard, is down the walkway, on the right as you go into the Legends Bar. if you want to see what’s happening within our section activities, it will be up there.

Until next time, regards,

Lorraine Cole
