July 2025 Update Indoor Bowls

Tuesday 1 Jul, 2025

Dear Members, the shortest day is now behind us. I hope everyone has been keeping warm and dry.

On 5th June, some bowlers from the Richmond Club visited us. Everyone was mixed up and an enjoyable night of bowls was enjoyed by all. It was concluded with supper.

The NZ Nationals were held at the EA Networks Sport centre at Ashburton from the 7th to the14th June where we had several members that played over the week.

Mike King was selected as Captain and to play in the Masters Academy Southern Zone in the men’s pairs. Bev Diamond was selected in the Academy Ladies Fours Southern Zone team which was played after Section play of the Triples on Wed 11th June.

Unfortunately, the Northern Zone won both the Masters and Academy matches.

Results from the Nationals: –

Mike King qualified in the master singles and reached the last eight. An awesome achievement Mike!

Qualifiers from Hornby in the Master Pairs were Dave Bullock and Jenny Hamilton, along with Mike and Ann Graham.

In the Open Pairs John Barltrop and Keren Beckett also qualified entered through St Pauls.

A huge congratulations goes out to Mike and Ann who won the Master Pairs achieving a NZ title. (photos Attached) WINNERS ARE GRINNERS!

In the Masters Triples the only Hornby player to qualify was Bev Diamond, entered through the Matangi club Waikato. Unfortunately, she was out first round post section after an extra end.

Also well done to Dave, Blair and Margaret Woods and Grant Richardson who reached the last eight in the fours entered through the Otautahi Owls. A great effort.

Eight days of Indoor Bowling concluded very quickly with lots of moans from the North Islanders complaining as to how cold it was down in the South.

Many wore beanies while playing, and scarves and coats the norm. Gee North Islanders – toughen up!!!

There were lovely views of the mountains with all the snow.

Four of our men, Mike, Dave, Bevan Matthews and Keith Hawkins have just returned from the Clubs NZ Men’s Nationals in Invercargill, unfortunately with no trophies.

Mike and Dave both qualified in the singles and in the pairs playing together. With tough competition out first round both days. The team also qualified in the fours but out first round.

Good effort guys.

We have four ladies who will be attending the Clubs NZ Women’s Nationals in Pukekohe from 14th to 17th July – Bev, Keren, Jude Will and Claire Stevenson.

Good luck ladies, enjoy the experience for the newbies and we look forward to the results.

Until next month good bowling.

Bev Diamond
