July 2025 – Cards Update

Tuesday 1 Jul, 2025

Hi everyone, welcome to our July issue. Even as frost, dusted the Port Hills and winter’s chill lingered, our card section kept up with twice-weekly games, and plenty of friendly rivalry.

We started off with our fun Pairs Night on 29th June. The winners were Nicky and Gregg Timms on 20pts. Close behind were Maurice King and Maurice Adler, and Kevin and Trish Cole and Tony Bakhos and Frank Martin.

We have had three weeks of Aggregate Games; this is where the final scores of the night are accumulated for the best five weeks out of six played in total.

The winner of week one was Ross Ranger, week two was Bill Turei and week three was Sharon Smith and Bev Smith equal.

Hornby Cards hosted a Six Handed Euchre Tournament that was open to all clubs. We had 66 players and 11 tables. The afternoon of 14 games of cards went well. Two Hornby teams got second and third.

Our Cards Euchre Section have started up a 500 afternoon for some of our members who have shown interest in playing 500 regularly at Hornby. We first held it on a Tuesday afternoon and got 22 players; it was enjoyed by all. The next week we had to change to Monday and the room, because of non-availability, and only 14 members were able to attend.

We are now into the second round of our Euchre/Crib Saturday Interclub Games. i.e., eight games to go, which means overall weekly results can change very easily. We will update next month!

We also started our Winter Tournament, which continues with finalists receiving the winning Shield Trophy at our Christmas Breakup. We have 12 pairs playing in two sections of six this year. The games are organised at any time by players themselves, usually in the bar, day or night. So, you will see lots of these games being played, over the next few weeks or so.

On Sunday 27th, our section is having our Mid-Winter Buffet Dinner in the Chalmers Restaurant, which members are looking forward to.

Check up on our notice boards on our Thursday Card nights, and the Cards Notice Board, under the stairwell, as you walk into the Legends Bar, for upcoming activities and an update re Saturday Cards.
