December 2023 – Cards Update

Friday 1 Dec, 2023

Hello to all members,

Here we are coming into that silly season, with Christmas coming upon us. For some people, this means running out of time to do things, functions and activities to go to, places to go, it goes on.

Firstly, to recap on our Card Section activities from last month.

On Thursday 26 October, we had our end of month pairs night, and it was enjoyed by all. We had 50 players on the night, 12 tables, plus a bye. The winners were Jack Jenman and Sharyn Robb. The runners-up were Liz Grashion and Colleen Crawford.

On Thursday 9 November, we held a Six-Handed Tournament. Members were divided into teams of three, playing other teams. Was a great, friendly night with a turnout of 51 players. The winners on the night were Tom Rae, Robyn Braggins and Dave Luke. The runners-up were Lesley Bulman, Gina Howden -Winter and Ann Kavanagh.

On Thursday 30, we had our last end-of-year pairs night, more information on this will be shared in the new year, but we are certain it was a good night shared by all.

Just a mention to our card section members,
I would like to thank you all, who took and returned promptly the purchased books and tickets for our All-Sports Christmas Raffle. These funds proportionally get given back to all the club sections, so we can give back to our members through our activities.

On that note, to all our section and other Club members who willingly purchase the bulk lotto tickets though Cheryl Gianelly, our Chairperson, every week, we appreciate your loyalty, and your contribution to our section funds.

Coming up on Thursday 7 December, we will be having our final Christmas Hamper function night. The night will include trophy presentations, a meal and then we will play a few games of Euchre. We will payout card prizes and raffles draws as Christmas Hamper prizes, this includes 1/2 hams and grocery basket hampers and numerous other prizes as well.

That will be all for the Euchre/Card Section for 2023.Members, please place in your calendars Thursday 1 February 2024. This will be our Cards first night with our usual Fun Night.

Of most importance! Next year, Hornby Club is hosting the 36th South Island Euchre Pairs Tournament, the Steinlager Cup Trophy. It will be held on Sunday 10 March. This tournament involves approx. 15 South Island Clubs, eight per team and 120+ players. We would appreciate if any of our card section members have access to obtaining sponsorship of any products, funds, raffle prizes etc, that we can help to run this tournament, please consult a Committee member with your ideas prior for Club documentation. We would really appreciate any help you can give. Also, prior to the day, can you come and help?

As this is the last magazine for 2023,
on behalf of our hard-working Card Committee, we wish all our members a Happy and Safe Christmas. We hope you have enjoyed the variation of different options we offer on our Thursday nights over the past year.

Regards Until Next Year,

Lorraine Cole
