Cards Update- November 2023

Thursday 2 Nov, 2023

Hello again to all members,

November is upon us, so much happening this month, Melbourne Cup Day, Chch Show week, NZ Trotting Cup and NZ Galloping Cup Day. Lots of action happening within our Hornby Club for these events.

To recap on our Card Section activities from last month.

On Thursday 28 September, our Thursday card section played for the “Owen Bright’ Trophy. This was the second year of play for this trophy. Owen was a past loyal member of Hornby Club, including our card section, for more than 50 years. Owen had pre-arranged with his family, prior to his death, to donate a cup trophy for our euchre/card section to play in his honour. This represents the years of enjoyment he had within our card section, and it has been a privilege for those that remember Owen.

Once again, we dedicated this trophy to our Pairs night, using “Accumulated Scoring” with all points won per game as a result, either win or lose, added together to give final result overall after 12 games. Congratulations to the winners on the night, Lesley Bulmer and Gina Howden-Winter. Runners up were John Churchill and Allan Shears, and Julie Cockburn and Terry McCallum came in close third.

We had a great turnout of 13 tables, 52 players, and had lovely supper at half time enjoyed by all.

On Friday 6 October, we had many of our card section players play in the All Sports “Dick Bain ” Tournament, he was also a loyal member for many years of the Cards section and friend to many. Everyone had a great night. There is a further report on this event within the newsletter.

On Thursday 12 October, we held a “Compulsory Pick Up Night”, another different concept to our normal progressive playing night. We will possibly change the rules slightly next year, as some found this a bit challenging. We had 39 players, and the overall winner was Paul Bulman on 19pts, and Betty Van der Werf on 17pts. Well done.

On Thursday 19 October, we held our “Annual 3 Handed Tournament “, (commonly called Cut-Throat) this event was always held for previous years on a Saturday afternoon, but due to less numbers participating over recent years, we have incorporated it to our Thursday night programme. This worked out really well this year.We had 11 tables; with 33 players It was a bit of an unknown for some new members but think everyone enjoyed the challenge.

We had a two-way tie for first, and one on third. So, we had a playoff involving these three players.

Winning the three handed trophy was Jack Jenman, Runner-up Tony Bakhos, and third was Warren Grimwood. Again, well done Jack. He will get his name up on the Honours Board upstairs in our Main All Sports Floor when we finally get them updated!

This week, Thursday 26 October, we had our end of month pairs night. This event is always enjoyed by our section members.

So, what’s happening in November…

An important change: Our committee have brought in a new rule from this month. If you are coming to play Euchre on a Thursday night, you must be in the room and paid up by 6.50 pm, i.e., 10 mins before start of play. This is to allow table organisers to pre-sort monies and raffle monies prior to the starting time of 7pm. We ask everyone to adhere to this. If you text or ring a controlling person prior, we can arrange your lateness.

On Thursday 9 November, we are having a special “six handed night “. Card Section members, please make up your teams of three.

Normal Progressive nights, Thursday 2nd, 16 and 23 November.

On Thursday 30 November, it is our last end of month Pairs Night and for the end of the 2023 year.

PLEASE KEEP FREE: Thursday 7 December for Euchre/card section ” XMAS HAMPER NIGHT “. We play cards and everyone has the chance to win lots of Xmas Goodies as prizes for both card prizes and for the many raffle prizes. This will be our last function night for our Card Section for 2023.

Then we wait for 2024………… That’s all for this month,

Lorraine Cole
