August 2024 – Indoor Bowls Update

Thursday 1 Aug, 2024

Hi Members,

The months are disappearing very quickly, hopefully not too much longer until we get warmer weather.

Unfortunately, not too many results from the South Islands in Ashburton Kings Birthday weekend. Darryl Gallagher, with a composite team, won the Triples. Well done.

Men’s Nationals in June at Pukekohe results:

  • Singles- Darryl last 32, Chris last 16
  • Pairs – Chris & Darryl out last 16
  • Triples- Chris, Mike & Darryl Last 8.

In the NZ Nationals in Whangarei, mid-June, Bev Diamond reached the last eight in the pairs with a player from North Wellington who she only met on the Friday on the way up. Great effort.

A very interesting nationals, with two fire alarms and a power outage when Northland was plunged into loss of power after a transformer came down. Certainly a few hiccups this year.

Bev was also selected to play in the Southern Zone against the Northern Zone with Jordan Keene from Hutt Valley in the Mixed Pairs. They were the only team to win all three games, but unfortunately Northern Zone won by two points overall.

Our club pairs were won by Keren Beckett and Blair Woods. Runner up was Darryl Gallagher and Alister Graham.

The Zone Finals were held recently in Oamaru. The only winners from Hornby were Chris and Donna Matthews in the Mixed Pairs – Awesome result. They now go to the NZ finals from 16th to 18th August. Good luck up in Wellington.

Veteran Triples held at CIBA 3rd equal was Bevan Matthews, Dixon Chapman and Keren Beckett. Along with Leo Ashby playing in a team from Springston.

The ladies Nationals were played in Invercargill from 15 to 18 July. Unfortunately, we only had two ladies participate, Bev Diamond and Jude Will. For Bev this was the first time skipping an event like this and Jude’s first time attending a ladies Nationals. It was a great week. Unfortunately, we didn’t qualify in any of the events, but it was a great experience.

They had a pool player in the triples, and two pool players in the fours. We managed two wins in the singles, triples and fours. Great effort.

Both Jude and Bev were selected for the South Island team to play the North after registration on Sunday night. The South won; Yahoo! Bev was made captain to be presented with the trophy.

Until next month, good bowling, keep warm, dry and healthy.

Bev Diamond. Treasurer
