April 2026 – Cards Update

Wednesday 1 Apr, 2026

Hello to all Hornby Members and Families,

Here we go again, another month moves on. There’s something special about our regular card night that people look forward to, where the same faces show up, with new members coming along some nights as well. Lively, friendly rivalry is what our members like.

Going back from last month’s magazine… We had our first end of month pairs night in February. We had a great turnout with 64 players, 16 tables. The winners on the night were Gwen Kirk and Faye Salton on 18 pts. Maurice Adler was lucky enough to get the perfect hand, so won a small jackpotted amount.

Thurs 5th March, we had an Accumulated Scoring night, with each game’s scores added up to the end of the last game. We had 51 players. The winner at the end of the night was Paul McOscar on 87 pts, with Dave Luke and Gina Howden both 2nd on 85 pts.

Sunday 8th was the Clubs NZ South Island Steinlager Trophy, hosted and played at Oxford. We had 8 players (4 pairs) playing in this tournament. There were 17 clubs participating from all areas of the South Island, with a total of 34 tables (136 players). The day was very well organised and a great lunch served. The winning team overall was Kaiapoi, with Oxford 2nd and Woolston 3rd.

Thurs 12th March was a normal progressive night, 44 players. The winner was Anne Hepburn on 20 pts, and Lorraine Cole 2nd on 19 pts.

Thurs 19th March we had our 6 handed tournament — teams of 3 play against each other. Always a fun night, with lots of humour amongst the players at tables. We had 51 members playing. The winners at the end of the night, playing 10 games, were Helen James, Bev Bulmer and Anne Hepburn on 14 pts. Back in 2nd, there were 5 teams sharing on 12 pts, getting a very small payout.

Thurs 26th March, we had our End of Month Pairs night, with 50 players on the night — lots of humour amongst players. At the end of the night we had a 2 way tie for 1st on 17 pts: Murray Bennie & Bruce McIntosh, and also John Churchill & Alan Shears. Well done, close scores behind.

Our Card Section 500 Group continues on Monday afternoons at 1pm. We have been regularly getting between 15–19 players over the last few weeks. Ideally, we would love more to come along.

Coming up on Thurs 16th April, we have our yearly AGM. Please, members, can we have others think seriously about joining our committee to help out during the year. We have so many card section players coming along each week, but the work is done by our little few committee… and most have been doing it for many years. There is a list to put up your names prior to the meeting on 16th April, at 7pm in the Glassworks Room.

We have our first game of Saturday Interclub Cards on 11th April, going to Brighton Club. I will put up the playing list for those playing that day shortly.

Members, keep an eye on our Notice Boards for up to date activities (down by Legends Bar), and especially those that will be playing each Saturday Cards.

We are always looking for new card players to join our section. Please come along.

That’s all for this month. Thank you.

Lorraine Cole
