April 2024 – Cards Update

Thursday 28 Mar, 2024

Hello to all members.

Our Cards Section is now full on, we hold our Euchre Card night for our members, every Thursday night. Since my last report, we had our first end of month pairs night on Thursday 29 February. We had a great turnout with 56 players and 14 tables. It is always a fun time playing with your same partner each game for the night. After playing 12 games on the night, we had a remarkable four-way draw: Diane Heath & Lorraine Cole, Jimmy Patu & Trevor Tubman. Diane Findlay & Lynette Ray, and Warren Grimwood & Margaret Delaney.

On 7 March we had our usual progressive night with 49 members playing. We then had our big weekend of cards. Firstly, on Saturday 9 March, we had the pre-game of Euchre, for any visitors and any club members. We had just on 60 players, with a good afternoon of cards and lots of raffles to buy, in anticipation for the next dayOn Sunday 10 March, our Hornby Club Cards Section were hosting the 36th South Island Euchre Tournament Trophy for Pairs and Teams Steinlager Cup Trophy, playing upstairs in the Events Centre. We had 14 teams from various South Island Clubs, with eight members in each, so had 112 players. We played 36 games during the whole day, between 9am till 4.30pm.

Our Hornby Club provided an awesome two course lunch time meal, choice of four mains and two desserts. We had nothing but continuous praise for the quick service and meals by just about every club and player. So, we really want to say a big thank you, to all staff responsible. Also, to the office staff and management, that helped us make this the successful tournament it was.

Also on that note, we must also thank all our sponsors which donated so many products, vouchers etc. A lot of these goods were used as Raffle Prizes, which
in turn, helped our financial side of hosting. And a big special thank you, to all our committee, Card members, and other Hornby Club members, that gave us their time over the two days. Everyone worked together so well, and we appreciate the awesome atmosphere we had
over the tournament.

As for the results, The Steinlager Cup Trophy was won this year again by Oxford Club, with them having won it for now the last four years in a row. The Pairs Results, we were happy to have Diane Heath and myself, Lorraine Cole, finish third overall out of 56 pairs, just eight points behind the winning Oxford Pair. On Thursday 21 March we had our six handed tournament, which is always a fun night. Teams of three play together all night. We had nine tables, with 51 players. After playing 10 games, our winners on the night were John Churchil, Allan Shears, & Marcia Whanga, on 15 pts. Closely on second equal, on 14 pts, there was a two-way tie. The evening was played in good spirits, as always.

Coming up on Thursday 28, we will be playing for the Eric Pycroft Trophy. He was a long past member of the Card Section, many years ago. Traditionally it is played as Men vs Ladies Night. We will have supper served at half time, which members will enjoy. I will be able to update you in next month’s magazine. Our next major event happening, is the start of 15 weeks of play, for our “Interclub Cribbage & Euchre Tournament”. Held on a Saturday weekly basis playing, Home and Away to various clubs in Christchurch. Our first week, is on Saturday 27 April.

Those that have played within our weekly team of 26 over the past years will know, we will be looking for some new members to join our
weekly team, when required as well. I will put up notices giving full information on this and talk to others on card nights.

On Thursday 11 April, we are having a different concept of scoring, with accumulative scoring.

We have our Annual General Meeting on Thursday 18 April. Please come along and give any input. We would like other members to put their names forward to go on committee. Why leave everything to the same few, week after week. We have meetings, once a month.

On Thursday 25, Anzac Day, we will have our usual end of month Pairs night. And as always to finish off, Our Card Section noticeboard, is down the walkway, on the right as you go into the Legends Bar. If you want to see what’s happening within our section, it will be up there. It is also on the Whiteboard in our Card Room, every Thursday Night.

Until next month,
Lorraine Cole
