November 2022 All Sports Update
Wednesday 2 Nov, 2022
On Sunday 9 October, Hornby Club were again able to participate in this special Challenge Trophy, being hosted at Kaiapoi Club.
This annual tournament was originally first held in 2018, but due to covid, was cancelled last year in 2021. So great to be able to be part of this year.
The concept is that there are four sports played, Euchre, Pool, Darts and Indoor Bowls. There are just four in each team, to play as two pairs, and you play each other club within your sport. Unfortunately, only four other clubs put teams forward this year, two pull-outs in last two days. So the clubs playing were Hornby, Kaiapoi, Richmond and New Brighton. Very disappointing lack of other club’s support for the organisers of Tournament and to all the players.
All games were played on a round- robin basis during the morning, with the club winning most points overall winning their individual trophy for that sport.
Lunch was then provided. Following, we all sat down within our own Club teams to do the Trivia Quiz, 4 rounds of Trivia on projector screen, (some questions were not so easy), with scores added to our final individual club teams scores. Hornby managed to get second equal in this quiz section.
So come to prizegiving, Hornby won the Darts Trophy, Hornby won the Indoor Bowls Trophy, Hornby won the Pool Trophy, and Euchre, (not this year) but have won previous years and Trivia we earned second equal.
Final result was that Hornby Club won the “Log of Wood Speights Club Challenge Trophy” for 2022.
We get the pleasure, as winners this year, of hosting next year’s tournament, which the organisers are trying to get more clubs from regional areas e.g. down south to participate in as well.
Our Hornby Teams that did so well to bring this Log of Wood and trophies back to Hornby were:
Darts have won this trophy each year so far. This year’s team was Sarah Pitama, Elliot Hitchings, Lance Odgers and Jordan Whyte.
Must be mentioned, highlights of their games on the day, Jordan got a 170 start and Lance got a 160 finish. Very impressive.
Also, back two years ago, last tournament we played, we had Kayden Milne playing with Jordan Whyte, but Kayden couldn’t make it this tournament as he was playing in the ‘World Youth Tournament “in Wigan, UK that weekend. Hornby Club are very proud of his achievement and his escalation to major youth tournaments overseas.
Other Trophy team winners on the day:
Indoor Bowls team: Mike King,
Keith Hawkins, Greg and Jo Hill, and special supporter young Declan Hill.
Pool Team: Ricky bell, Alan Robertson, Pauline Laugesen, Wendy Carlson
Euchre Team: Lorraine Cole, Diane Heath, Bev Bulmer, Anne Hepburn

As I said, next year Hornby Club to host …
