September 2024 – Pool Update
Friday 30 Aug, 2024
It’s right in the middle of the busy time for Pool in Christchurch, with tournaments on for the last three weekends for some of us, and more to come in the next couple of weeks as well.
The first weekend of August was the Allan Cowan Memorial Tournament where we remember Allan and what he did for Canterbury and Hornby Pool.
Paul Hinch and Lee Taylor got into the last 16 of the field of 160 but did not progress further in the Tier 1 Post Section draw. Roberto Taboada made it through to the Final of the Tier 3 Post Section but lost out to Richmond’s Dan O’Neill.
The next weekend saw the Canterbury Men’s Masters with another good representation of Hornby players in a strong field. Tony Gumley and Alan Robertson pushed through to the Quarter Finals of the main draw; Leon Hook
won the final of the Trophy.
Last weekend was the Canterbury Open Pairs and the Canterbury Ladies Pairs, run conjointly at the same venue, again a very full hall at the Papanui Club’s Bowling Clubrooms.
The Open Pairs was defended by last year’s winners, Adam Lilley and Jordan Maehe. Richie Whitty and Roberto Toboada made it to the Quarter Finals of the main draw, the Main Flight Final was an all-Hornby affair, with Mike Hughes and Daniel Cole beating out Leo Tafu and Paul Blackler.
The Canterbury Ladies Pairs was won by Hornby’s Jojo Colemand and Sherralee Boyce, with Pauline Laugesen and Frankie Chapman the losing Finalists in the Trophy event. The pairs of Maxine Soal / Letitia Jackson and Wendy Carlson / Pauline Morris got through to the Quarter Finals of the main event.
The next weekend will see the Richmond Ladies Masters played in one day on Saturday 24th August with the Hornby Clubs’ in-house Mixed Pairs being played on Sunday 25th. The following weekend on Sunday 1st September will be the in-house Booth Anderson Singles.
Interclub is in the last part of the season, with a couple of Hornby teams likely to make the top six in their Division to qualify for Finals Day, Hornby Titans in Premiers, Hornby Silver in Division 1, Hornby Diamondz in a tight battle for the 6th spot in Division 2 and Hornby Black in the same situation in Division 3.
We will be running a Summer League again this year on Tuesdays for the Open grades – all welcome; and on Wednesdays for lower grades and new players only, which is a good way to learn the rules and meet people in the pool scene in a friendly but competitive environment.
See you there and good potting.
