September 2024 – Cards Update

Friday 30 Aug, 2024

Hi to all Hornby Club Members and families.

We are now coming into September, with hopefully our days and nights not so cold.

As always, we have lots happening within our Cards/Euchre Section. Our card night is every Thursday night from 7pm to 9-15pm. We play down in the Glassworks Room, through the Restaurant, weekly.

Just to recap from my last month’s magazine activities…

On Thursday 25th July our ever-popular End Of Month Pairs Night was held. We had 15 tables, 60 players, a great turnout. We had a three-pair tie for first. Gina Howden-Winter and Lesley Bulmer, Dave Luke and Tom Rae, Jimmy Patu and Trevor Tubman all on 18 points. Well done to you all.

We have now played our last Saturday Interclub Games for this year, 15 weeks and 26 players required to play every Saturday now completed. We congratulate Cashmere Club for winning the Shield, as we had our club members representing at the prizegiving at Woolston Club on Saturday 24 August. Well done receiving the impressive Shield Trophy, it’s over 120 years old, and to Richmond in second place overall, and all I can say is, Hornby look forward to next year for better results.

I mentioned last month, we have card section members playing in the 29th Clubs NZ National Euchre Singles Tournament, running over two days at Kaiapoi Club. We had 18 players, as we were asked by Kaiapoi, to add numbers, to cover non-players, at the start of the tournament. There were 312 registered players, 18 North Island Clubs represented and 20 South Island Clubs. Kaiapoi Club did an amazing job running this Tournament, it is not an easy task.

As for the results, Hornby was proud to announce Warren Grimwood, as winner of the Plate Event on day 2 out of 144 players. On 40 pts, receiving the Plate Trophy… Kaiapoi, well done. Awesome meals, and organisation. You did so well.

We are going to Weymouth, Auckland next year for the Nationals, they last held this tournament back in 2008, 16 years ago, so it will be great to go back there. I played in that tournament and look forward to going back with our Hornby Team.

On Sunday 4th August, the All Sports held the “Alan Cole Trophy” playing Euchre against the other sections. In previous years we had more sections playing. This year it was very disappointing that only three of 11 sections in this club participated, with five teams playing,

The results on the day were, Cards 2 1st, Cards 1 2nd, Golf 3rd…

We have started the second round of Aggregate Games which goes through to Thursday, September 19:

  • Week 1. 44 players. Bruce McIntosh 20pts, Maurice King 19pts.
Week 2. 52 players. Belinda Jones 19pts, Jack Jenman, Russell Reekie 17pts.
Week 3. 46 players. Cheryl Gianelly,19 pts, Gavin Dunn 17pts.

Sunday, August 25th, we had our Six-Handed Tournament up in the Mezzanine floor. It was open to all clubs, and we had a good turnout with 11 tables and 63 players. By all comments, everyone enjoyed the afternoon. We had biscuits, snacks and cheese at half-break time.

Regards

Lorraine Cole
