September 2022 Euchre / Cards Update

Thursday 1 Sep, 2022

Hi to all Members.

We now come into the Spring season of September, and we are looking forward to some warmer days and evenings.

We have finally finished our 15 games of competition of Interclub Saturday Cards (9 Euchre and 4 Crib pairs) which started back on the last weekend of April. We had three complete rounds against five other local Christchurch Clubs. Unfortunately, we lost the last two games, which cost us being able to win the Championship Trophy Shield, but we did secure the Runner-Up Trophy, and also came Runner-Up for the total aggregate games over the 15 weeks.

On behalf of Helen James and myself as Club Captain, we would like to thank all our section members who were part of our 26-member team week after week. A shout out to those that were only too happy to fill in if need be. There will be no more text messages early in the week, sorting out extra players

to cover the unavailable players each week, which is a relief! Not forgetting Tim and Mick B, who were our regular runners to get refreshments for any members during our games, home or away. Finally, I would also like to thank Shane Keating from NZ Touring, who provided his luxury bus on all our away games. So until May next year, that competition is all over.

We are now currently into our second six weeks of Aggregate Games, finishing on 15 September.

Over the weekend of 20/21 August, we had a team of nine players travel up to Blenheim (Clubs of Marlborough) for the 27 National Singles Euchre Championship Tournament. There were 216 players overall playing from all over NZ, with a few others not able to get there due to weather and flight unavailability.

The tournament is based on playing 36 progressive games on the Saturday, so an early start from the motel, and then another 27 games on the Sunday, where you play either the Championship Event or Plate Event, depending on the total points you got on the Saturday.

We congratulate Anne Hepburn who was awarded the Runner-Up, combined two-day Aggregate Score Trophy.

In the North vs South Challenge, our Bernie Mckenzie and Hornby member Alan Shears (playing in the Cashmere team) were awarded certificates and medals.

Some of our section members are in progress of our in-house “Winter Tournament”. There are 16 pairs divided into four sections initially, the games are mostly played at various times in the main Legends Bar. We will eventually get down to a Semi Final and Final with the winners presented a Trophy at our Xmas Breakup Function.

On Sunday 28 August, we are hosting our only six handed tournament for 2022. This is open to all clubs, so I
am sure it will run smoothly. We are looking forward to a good turnout.

We have our bus trip to Oxford Club to play cards on 3 September, via Kaiapoi Club for lunch, this is another event we are all excited for. We have 50 on the bus booked. I will update you all next month on the results along with some photos of the day.

We have a special night coming up on Thursday 29 September. It will be the end of month Pairs night, and for the winners, we will be presenting the “Owen Bright Challenge Trophy”. Owen was a loyal member of the Hornby Club and the Card section for many years. Sadly, he passed away recently. But as his health declined, he arranged with his family and Kevin Cole to organise a trophy in his name. We are honoured that he wanted to donate a trophy in his memory to recognise the enjoyment he shared in the cards section for all those 50 years or more. RIP Owen.

Coming up on Saturday 1 October, we are having our Three handed (Commonly known as Cutthroat) Tournament Trophy. The winners name goes up on our Cards Honours Board in the All Sports Room. Keep this day free. This event is just for our Card Section members, come along and be part of it.

Regards,
Lorraine Cole
