September 2021 Cards Update
Friday 3 Sep, 2021
With September upon us, and under Covid Alerts, it has been an interesting and tentative time recently.
So back to our Card Section activities we had over the past month. End of July, we had our Pairs night, it was a great turnout of 52 players and 13 tables with a fun social atmosphere during the night. Our members always enjoy these special nights and there were close finishing scores. First on 18pts was Mary Churchill and Bernie McKenzie, second equal on 17pts was Helen James and Jane Mayo tied with Jackie Cartwright and Alan Tomlinson.
On Wednesday 4 August, our Euchre/Cards Section played with the Crib Section, for the annual “Thelma Dawson Trophy”. Thelma was a valued member of both the card and crib sections for many years until she passed away in 2006, and her family gave a trophy to both our sections to be played for, in memory of Thelma. It was another enjoyable night, with the overall win going to the Crib Section.
A few days later was the All Sports, “Alan Cole Euchre Trophy”. We had three teams playing, with our ‘Cards Two’ team, winning on theday. Allourmembers had an enjoyable afternoon of cards played amongst members of other sections of the Club.
On Saturday, the Interclub/Crib and Euchre Tournament was completed. The Tournament is played each Saturday amongst our local Christchurch Clubs, with 14 weeks of play from May through to August. Hornby had been tracking second to Woolston Club at the end of the first round, and after the final games we still could not get in front of them in overall points. We were therefore Runner up in the Championship, but still will get to collect a trophy and Runner up in Total Aggregate scores.
I would like to thank all our members who have participated over these past few weeks, and hope in turn you have enjoyed the games amongst our other Clubs. There is always next year!
I would like to thank Shane Keating from NZ Touring Ltd, for providing his time and luxury coach to take us to
our away games. Thank you. Unfortunately, the presentation of Trophies at Woolston Club was postponed to a later
date. On that note, we had to cancel our Six Handed Euchre Tournament and our Three Handed Tournament that were due to be held in the next couple of weeks.
We recently had a team of 10 play in the National Euchre Singles Championships up at Porirua Club, Wellington. It was a full-on weekend playing two days of euchre. There were 34 Clubs represented from all over NZ, and just on 300 players. It was a well-run tournament and great hospitality was shown by the Porirua Club. The only medal brought home, was given to Trish Cole, for being part of the North vs South selection.
All going well on Saturday 9 October, we have organised a day trip to Oxford Club, to play cards. The bus will be leaving the club at 10am, going through to Kaiapoi Club for the morning and lunch there. Then onto Oxford Club for an organised afternoon of cards with their members, or just to spend the time socialising there. The cost is $30 per person. Please check our notice boards for further payment details.
To finish off, going forward for our section, we can only wait till the Club fully reopens so we can commence our section activities.
Everyone, keep safe.
Regards
Lorraine Cole
