October 2022 Euchre / Cards Update

Monday 3 Oct, 2022

Hi Members,

So, we have now officially “Sprung Forward”, with clocks going forward, into daylight saving. Christmas will be here, before we know it!

The Cards section have had a lot of activities during the month of September, as well as our normal Thursday Euchre nights.

On Sunday 28 August, we held our six handed tournament, open to all other local clubs including some players who came from Timaru. We had a good turnout with 13.5 tables of 81 players.

On Saturday 3 September, we had 50 members go on our bus trip to Oxford Club, to play cards with Oxford card members. We first went to Kaiapoi Club, where we were booked in for a lovely roast meal, and a couple of hours social time. We then went on to Oxford Club, some playing Euchre and others socialising in the main bar. A fun day had by all.

Each Thursday Euchre night, we have a jackpotted cash prize, for anyone who gets dealt the “Perfect Hand” (top 5 cards of one suit, including the Jack and Left) , and plays it out. Anne Hepburn was dealt one, so got the cash prize. Lucky!

We have just completed our second round of six weeks of Aggregate games. The winner with most points this time was Jimmy Patu, on 77 pts, with a four-way tie on 74 pts, by John Churchill, Sharon Lord, Lynn McKay and Allan Shears. Congratulations to these members and all those others that were so close in points as well.

Our in house ‘Winter Tournament’, is still in progress, with the four section winning pairs and second placers, who go through to the next round.

As of this magazine going to print, coming up in the next few days we have some tournaments arranged. On Thursday 29, we will be playing for the “Owen Bright Challenge Trophy”. To be played in pairs, but with a different concept of accumulative scoring. The more points you get each game, get added to your score tally to determine the highest scores, for them to be winners of the trophy. Should be interesting and we will have supper to finish off with. On Saturday 1 October, we have our three handed Tournament. The winner on this afternoon gets their name on our Card Section Honours Board, up in the Big All Sports Room.

Also coming up, on Thursday 13 October, we will playing for the “Thelma Dawson Trophy”, against the Crib Section. This is always a fun social night, followed by supper. We will finish off this month, on the last Thursday night 27 October, with our usual pairs night.

So as you can see, October will be another busy month for our Card Section members, and we hope everyone enjoys these nights and tournaments that the Card Section Committee arrange for you all.

Till next month.

Regards,
Lorraine Cole
