November 2022 Euchre / Cards Update

Wednesday 2 Nov, 2022

Hi Members,

Again we have had another busy month with activities for our members, with in-house tournaments played mainly on our Thursday club nights, for our section members to be a part of. To list what we had on….

Thursday 29 September. “Owen Bright Challenge Trophy”

We played for this inaugural trophy on our regular last Thursday pairs night. The late Owen Bright was a loyal and well-known club member and a member of our card section for more than 50 years. Prior to his health deteriorating, he advised Kevin Cole, he wished to donate a trophy in his name, for his years of enjoyment he had within our card section over so many years. His daughter, Sandra Winter arranged this impressive trophy, which Owen was proud to give us, knowing we would arrange a special tournament in his memory, after his passing away. We held this pairs night, with a new concept of scoring, of accumulating points won from each game for a final tally at end. Members were quick to pick up on new scoring way which added to atmosphere on the night. We had good turnout of 12 tables, 48 players, and supper halfway through, enjoyed by all members.

The winners with highest tally and receiving the trophy on 87 pts were Diane Findlay and Sharon Smith. Closely second on 86 pts were Lesley Bulman and Gina Howden-Winter, and third on 84 pts, Jimmy Patu and Trevor Tubman. It was a fun night, enjoyed by everyone. The presentation of Owens Trophy will be presented to Diane and Sharon by his family at our last Xmas Hamper Night.

Saturday 1 October (just 2 days later). We held our Special “3 handed tournament”, commonly known as Cutthroat competition.

There are three players at each table with everyone out for themselves. Unfortunately, we only had 19 members, come to play, but it is not everyone’s favourite game. But to our section, it is special as the winner gets their name up on the cards honours board, in the Upstairs Sport’s Hall as per every other year. We have arranged for the first time a trophy for engraving which will be presented to the winner of this tournament at our Xmas Function. On the day, the winner was Jimmy Patu on 20pts, second, Marcia Whaanga on 18 pts, and third equal on 17pts, John Churchill and Anne Hepburn. Well done and thanks to those that participated. We finished off with a lovely afternoon tea.

Thursday 18 October “Thelma Dawson Trophy”

We held this annual tournament night, with our Euchre /Cards Section members and Club Crib Section Members combining to play. This year, the Cards Section will host and next year Crib will. Thelma Dawson, was a past loyal member and player of both our sections for over 20 years prior to her death in 2006. Her family after her passing away, presented a trophy, in her honour, which we are privileged to play for as a combined evening for both Euchre and Crib. We had 12 tables of Euchre games played, and two tables of Crib games played. Most combined members chose to play Euchre on the night, their choice. The individual top points scorers overall on the night were first equal on 19pts, Julie Cockburn and Anne Kavanagh and Allan Shears second on 18pts. With special percentage calculations, Crib won the overall Thelma Dawson Trophy. We had a lovely supper at half time.

So what’s coming up next for our members…

We will already have played the last pairs night for October 27 prior to this newsletter coming out. I will report on the results next month. On Thursday 3 November we are having a change on our Thursday night to have a six handed tournament for our members instead. We have advertised on our whiteboard for the last two weeks on card night so members have been sorting out their teams for this night. It is always a fun, social night. We will have tea, coffee and a bite to eat. Results will be given in the next newsletter.

The following week, Thursday November 10 (Cup Week) will be our “Compulsory Pick Up Night”. Another new concept for our Thursday nights. It will most definitely create some interesting play of cards in desperation…maybe.

Thursday November 17, back to a club normal progressive euchre night. On the last Thursday, November 24, we will be having our final last Pairs night for 2022. Get your partner!

Going forward, we come to our Xmas Breakup Function. Thursday 1 December, Our Xmas Hamper night will be our final Euchre/Cards night. Everyone loves this final night of playing progressive euchre, hopefully getting good scores and to get a chance to win one of those hamper prizes.

We will also allocate tickets for lucky draws this year, so that will take over the raffle, so no one misses out on chance. See what happens.

Till next month.
