May 2023 Euchre & Cards Update
Tuesday 2 May, 2023
Hi to all members,
We are now into May with the days and nights getting colder. We have got through April, complete with Easter, school holidays and Anzac Day remembrance.
Just to recap since last month’s magazine. We had our Pairs Night on Thursday 30 March, with 46 players. This was a fun, social night as always. The winners on 20 pts were Cheryl Gianelly and Bernie McKenzie, second was Tom Rae and Dave Luke on 19, and third was Sharon Lord and Marcia Whaanga. Close scores!
On Thursday 13 April, we held normal progressive night (winners move), but with scoring done on all accumulative scores on each game, whether you won or lost. So, if you consistently got above average scores, this was an advantage. The overall individual winner was Dave McKay on 84 pts, with Ricky Winter just 1 pt behind on 83, and Lyn McKay and Maurice Adler both on 80pts. Another fun night with a bit of difference.
Then we had our Cards Section Annual General Meeting AGM, on Thursday 20 April. We had 42 people in attendance.
Cheryl Gianelly gave her detailed Chairperson’s Report, congratulating winners of tournaments during the year. She also gave a special thanks to our Card Section Members and to our Hornby Club, especially Tracey Green, who is in charge of Functions & Conference, and her Club catering team for our awesome suppers/ afternoon teas.
Elections were very straight forward, from nominations listed.
Chairperson unopposed, Cheryl Gianelly, in her fourth year. Vice Chairperson unopposed, Helen
James, also in her fourth year. Treasurer unopposed, Bernie McKenzie in her second year. Secretary, new this year Jackie Cartwright, with the standing down of Val Hore after three years.
Our existing committee retained, Lorraine Cole, Anne Hepburn, Bev Bulmer, Gwen Kirk, Bev Smith and we have John Churchill and Alan Shears returning back to committee helping us set up every Thursday night and arrange activities/tournaments etc for all our Card Section Members. We appreciate those in committee who give their own time for the benefit of all the Card members.
Our membership subs have been retained at $10, payable by 31 May, then will be increased to $15. Please liaise with us to pay those subs, with the membership slip/details to be completed with each payment.
We finished off the night with various groups playing casual cards and an awesome supper.
On Thursday 27 April, We had a great turnout of 48 players, 12 tables, everyone enjoys this pairs concept on the last Thursday of the month. As usual, we play our six games then we stop for tea/coffee and biscuits at half time, and then continue the last six games. The winners on the night were, Anne Hepburn and Bev Bulmer on 19 pts, with Paul Bulman and Ricky Winter on 17pts. Well done. Moving forward to what is happening in our Euchre/Card Section from now on…
On Saturday 29 April, we have our first game in the “Christchurch Clubs Interclub Euchre/Crib Games Tournament”. Hornby Club has been part of this tournament, playing on Saturday afternoons over winter months, since joining back in 1988, for the last 35 years.
The original ‘Shield Trophy ” that we play for, is well over 120 years old. The original tournament started back in 1902, between four clubs but as Christchurch Clubs have developed over years since and clubs closed, there have been many changes to the club’s cards format that is played today. The original concept of games from day one was Euchre, Crib and Billiards. Billiards was dropped in 1988.
So, looking at this year, Hornby have 15 weeks of interclub to play. We will play each club three rounds, either home or away. We start on Saturday 29 April and the last game will be on Saturday 12 August. Our team each week consists of 26 players, which Helen James and I organise each week. We need to have nine pairs Euchre and four pairs Crib. It can sometimes be challenging to get a full team, but we do have other loyal members that will play when asked. We have a rule, our away games policy is our entire team always travels by coach/bus as a team. But we do invite any Hornby card section members that would like to come for a ride, you are welcome to join us.
We have all information re Saturday Cards and Euchre /cards on our Card Section Notice Board under the stairwell on the right going into the Legends Bar.
Until next month. Regards.
Lorraine Cole
