March 2024 – Pool Update

Monday 4 Mar, 2024

Hi everyone,

It has been a busy couple of weeks for the Pool scene at the Hornby Club; with Team selection for the 2024 interclub, our first-ever Scotch pairs Tournament, the Hubbard Shield Drawn Pairs on Sunday 18, the Summer League Finals and also, somehow slotted in there was the Cashmere Pre-Season Tournament with a fair few Hornby players doing well.

The inaugural Peach-Walker Scotch Pairs Tournament was held on Sunday 4 Feb with a great turnout. Named after two stalwarts of the Hornby Club pool scene, John Peach (deceased) and Graeme Walker. John captained Hornby Gold Premiers for many years during its heyday, as well as being Manager and Selector for the

New Zealand Pool team that toured Australia and South Africa during the 1990’s. Graeme Walker needs little introduction to members, a past South Island Champion, currently our table groomer, and a very skilled player in his own right.

Leo Tafu and Dennis Thompson outplayed the field to take the tournament out, beating John Renwick and Sherralee Boyce 4-3 in a close-run final.

Cashmere Club Pre-Season Tournament on Sunday 10th and 11th February had nine entries from Hornby, with our own Justin Dykhoff coming runner up in the Plate final. Good work Justin.

Our Tuesdays and Wednesdays Summer League wound up over the last couple of weeks. Support for the Summer League was strong this year and is proving a popular event in the ‘off-season’. The League is geared for all levels of players and is a good way of keeping in touch over the summer or introducing yourself to the game if you are a new player.

The Tuesday teams’ event was taken out by “The Green Machine” captained by Lee Brady. Andy Parke took home the prize for the best overall results for the summer season.

The Wednesday Finals Knockout was a close-run competition with Mike Cheng coming through in the top tier over his mate Antonio Du and Cameron Young taking the prize for Tier 2 over Richard Bassett. Many thanks to Richard and Jan for running the Wednesday competition, it is not easy to compete while you are organising games and players.

The Harry Hubbard Drawn Pairs ran on Sunday 18, with Alan Robertson and Paul Morris beating Leo Tafu and Lee Brady in the final. Well done all players.

Our interclub teams are entered with Canterbury 8 Ball, we have two Premier teams, three Division 1, 1 Division 2 and three Division 3 teams entered.

It’s not too late to join a team! We are looking for players to fill spaces in playing rosters in a couple of divisions as reserves or full-timers. It’s never too late to flap a cue about.

Contact Pauline Laugesen if you are interested. Good Potting!
