March 2026 – Travel Update
Sunday 1 Mar, 2026
Welcome to the very mixed up weather we have had for summer. Hard to imagine what the day might bring at the moment, and sad that we have now reached autumn.
On Sunday 22nd February, a group of 40 members left Hornby Club at 10.30am for a brunch at Under The Red Verandah. This place is very popular, and they were extremely busy, but the staff managed our pre ordered meals very well. This is one of the most popular breakfast cafés in Christchurch, and they are popular for a reason. The meals and service were outstanding. They were originally located in Gloucester Street until the devastating earthquake destroyed that building. Ironically, the 15 year anniversary of that dreadful quake was actually on the day we had our brunch. I doubt many even realised that.
On completion of our brunch, we travelled on to Richmond Club for a couple of hours for a relaxing drink and chat before making our way back to Hornby Club. Most of us then stayed on at the club for another couple of hours or more. We think everyone enjoyed the day out.
Future events
We are now planning a mid winter Christmas dinner. We are unable to give details as yet, but please keep Saturday 13th June free.
The final touches for the week long trip south, including the Oyster Festival and the trip across the Foveaux Strait to Stewart Island, are included.
The Travel Section’s next monthly meeting will be held at the Hornby Club at 7pm on Monday 16th March.
