March 2023 Euchre & Cards update

Thursday 2 Mar, 2023

Hi members,

We are now fully into our Thursday Euchre Card nights, and thank all those members that are coming along to play. We also have a few new members as well which is awesome.

Our first night back on Thursday 2 February was a fun, social night with five games of bingo and five games
of euchre. Thanks, Ricky, for being our special caller for the bingo games. We paid out Cash pay-outs for Houses and chocolate for lines. Playing Bingo, for some of our members, would not be a normal, but they still like to take part on this night. Then we played the five games of Euchre, and we had a great turnout with 42 members. An awesome showing for our opening night. We finished off with an awesome supper and tea and coffee.

We had our usual progressive euchre nights over the next two weeks. On 23 February (our last Thursday of month), was our first “Pairs Night”. This night you play with the same partner and is always enjoyed by our members. The winners were Diane Finlay and Maurice Adler on 19 points. Close behind was Cheryl Gianelly and Bernie McKenzie on 18 pts, with Malcolm Cole and Julie Cockburn on 16 pts, finishing third. We had 38 players enjoying our pairs night. It is a bit of a fun night with Tea and Coffee as usual at half time break.

Coming up on Sunday 5 March, we are hosting a “Six Handed Tournament”, at Hornby Club , open to all members and clubs which has been advertised to all clubs. Teams are made up with three people each. Hopefully we will get at least 8-10 tables, a total of 48-60 people. Reporting time is 12noon and play starts at 12.30pm. Please come along…

On Thursday 9 March, our euchre night will be a “Six Handed ” evening as well. So please make up your own teams of three each, ready for the night. We will check the week prior if anyone needs to be put within a team of three, but please let us know on the Thursday prior.

On Sunday 12 March, we have a team of eight participating in the Clubs NZ, South Island Euchre Steinlager Cup Tournament, being held at Kaiapoi Club this year. Last year, we played at Richmond Club and there were 15 clubs playing from throughout the South Island with a total of 120 players and 36 games on the Sunday. So, it is a full-on day of playing euchre for us.

Hornby Card Section have taken on next year, 2024, to host the South Island Euchre Steinlager Tournament in March. We would like any members that could contribute their technical skills or are just willing to help us over the weekend of 9,10 March 2024. We need a subcommittee to be part of this. We need help to run this tournament, please let any of us know at cards on a Thursday night if you can help in any way. Clickers, drinks run, raffles, lots to do on the actual day! We will need many helpers on the day, so please can you put your names forward. Hornby Cards section want to host and run a great Tournament, but we need our section members to help us.

Then we get to play on 23 March, for the ” Eric Pycroft Trophy”(donated after an old-time member). Mens vs Ladies Night. We have a formula for table changes and it can be a wee challenging, but hope we have sorted.

Over the years, we play this night as Men’s vs Ladies but we sort out on night, depending on number men’s to ladies numbers.

Finishing on 30 March, we have our end of month ” Pairs Night”.

We seem to have so much happening this month…But it is GOOD!

If you want to come and join and be part of our section. Please come up at 6.45 pm any Thursday night. We would love to meet you.

Regards.
Lorraine Cole
