June 2024 – Cards Update

Friday 31 May, 2024

Hello to all our Club Members.

Here we are, into the colder days and nights of June. Our Cards Euchre section continues to get up to nearly 50 members every Thursday card night. We play Euchre down in the Glassworks Room, through the Restaurant on the left of the office. We keep getting new members coming along to join us, which is great, and are happy to bring them into our social nights of playing Euchre.

So back to the last Thursday 25 April, we had our usual pairs night, which members always look forward to. There always seems to be more laughs coming from the tables on this night. We had 12 tables with 24 pairs, a total of 48 players. The winners on the night were Gina Howden-Winter and James Kavanagh on 20 pts. Second on 19pts were Maurice Adler and Maurice King. Third was Jimmy Patu and Trevor Tubman on 17pts. Well done everyone.

On Thursday 2nd May, we had our normal Progressive night, with 48 players and two new members, Maureen and John, who joined us for the first time.

On Thursday 9th May, it was our special night for compulsory pickup, by the dealer, if not ordered up or turned down after the deal. Another different concept, with more “Euchres” of 2 pts given away, than on a normal night, but most enjoyed. We had 46 players competing. So, after 12 games completed on a progressive basis, we had two first-equal winners on 20 pts. They were Maurice King and James Kavanagh, with four other members second equal on 17 pts. They were Tom Rae, Jack Jenman, Ricky Winter and Dave McKay.

On Thursday 16th May, we had our usual progressive night, a room full of 13 tables and 52 players, great to have everyone keep coming back each week, when they can. We had a first equal tie on 20pts, with Anne Hepburn and Anne Smith. Well done ladies.

On Friday 10th May, it was the first ‘All Sports ‘, evening, for the Les Griffiths Trophy. We had, between the members of both Euchre and Crib Sections, a total of three teams playing on the night. A great night was had by all.

On Thursday 23rd May, we had our normal progressive night with 51 players coming to the night.

We will all do it again, for the next All Sports Tournament, “Dumbo Hampton” Trophy, on Friday 21st June.

For our Saturday Cards Interclub, we have so far played four games, just one win at this stage. We still have another 11 games to go.

We finish the first round of five games against all Christchurch Clubs on 1st June. We have another two rounds to play against each other from here. The last game will be on 10th August.

So, what do the Cards Section have coming up this month?

On Thursday 30th May, it is our ever-popular end-of-month pairs night. I will update the results and photos in next month’s magazine.

On Thursday 6th June, it is the start of our first Aggregate series played over the next six weeks. Basically, each week that you come and play euchre on a Thursday night, over the next 6 weeks, the scores get collated to your overall total. At the end of the 6th week, on 11th July, the best five weeks of your score (you drop your lowest score) becomes your final total. Obviously, if you miss a couple of weeks, that doesn’t help your overall total. There are payouts to the top three scores overall in late July, and magazine photo taken of course!

On Sunday 16th June, our Hornby Card Section are hosting our allocated Sunday Six Handed Tournament, it is open to all other clubs and members. We always get a great turnout from all clubs to our tournament day. Reporting time is 12 noon, we will start cards at 12.30pm.

On Friday 21st June, it is the All Sports Dumbo Hampton Tournament.

Look forward to giving our updates next month,

Regards

Lorraine Cole
