March 2025 – Managers Report

Saturday 1 Mar, 2025

Hi Members.

What a great February at the Club, Waitangi weekend, Family Day, Super Rugby kicking off, Sections starting and Schools back!

Our Club continues to be busy, with functions during the day, the Café humming with your conversation and custom daily. People are also enjoying the big screen in the bar and outdoor bean bags and cornhole on the finer days.

Chalmers Buffet has restarted for the year and is going well. We are offering a complimentary 12-ounce house beer, wine or soft drink with $40 buffet tickets for March.

Don’t forget to grab your tickets for the cocktail night in Mezzanine Bar on 22 March. There is a Tiki theme for the evening, spot prizes and plenty of fun for all.

Special General Meeting

On Tuesday 25 February, a special general meeting was held. A quorum was present, and the rule updates were introduced by the President, Terry McCallum and Rules Committee convenor Barry Grose. The rules proposed to be updated were the All Sports Committee Rule and the Qualification for Office rule, Rule 19.

Both rule updates were passed unanimously by the members present. A brief description of the updates is outlined below:

  • Rule 19 – Qualifications for Office – To put your name forward for a position on the executive you must have held apposition on the Board of Governance within the last four (4) terms.
  • All Sports Committee Rule – Reinstate the previous version of the rules

A copy of the rule updates is on the noticeboard and updated ruled books are now available from the office.

Sport

On the sport front, the Crusaders had their first kick out at Kirwee on the last Friday of the month. We are looking forward to a really busy year of Sport on the Big Screen:

– Black Caps – Tour of Pakistan
– Golf – NZ Open is on in the opening weekend of the month
– Super Rugby – Crusaders had a good win with their first game, and it was a good, if not successful, second hit out against the Chiefs who fought back hard.
– NRL – Warriors kick off this month. Will it be our year?
– A League – Yes, the round ball season is going as well, with the Auckland FC having a positive start to their season and taking out the Phoenix 6-1.
– Formula 1 – Starts in Melbourne this month, live in the Club, with replays on Mondays for the majority of the rest of the season

Sections

Great to have the first All Sports evening of the year and see you all in the Club. You are doing a fantastic job representing Hornby Club in your sports. As this goes to print, the Darts section is in action at Richmond Club in the South Islands. Pop over and see the team perform if you have a chance as they are great events.

Gaming room

As always, your respectful manner to our staff completing more frequent and deliberate interactions with yourselves to meet the obligations of the new laws is greatly appreciated. Please do not be offended, we are doing what we have to and what the previous government thinks is best for you.

Remember to bet responsibly. Lastly don’t forget to renew your membership before the end of the month to retain your number. Have a great day,

Tim Mathews
