February 2024 – Cards Update

Hello to all members, families and friends and welcome to the new year of 2024. I hope everyone all shared special times over the Christmas and New Year break.
Just to recap our last December magazine, we had our last night of Nov pairs, a great turnout, 13 tables, 52 players came to play, wearing some Xmas accessories. It was a fun night.
Winners on the night were Dave and Lyn Mckay on 19pts and Anne Hepburn and Bev Bulmer, on 18pts. Well done.
We held our Christmas Special Hamper Night Final Function for the year on Thursday 6 Dec. We had 62 members attend on the night.
The Winter Tournament Shield was presented to Maree McGregor and Marcia Whanga, and the Euchre Trophy Of Year, was given to Tony Bakhos, chosen by Marina Coles, last year’s holder.
After our meal, we played seven games of Euchre, and gave Lucky Table Prizes out during the night. We then concluded the night, paying out the 30-odd Raffle, ‘pick of the table’ prizes, including half hams, grocery
hampers, and lots of Xmas goods. We then also paid out the Card playing prizes on the seven games. Congrats to Kevin Cole, who top scored, with 7 wins from 7 games.
Now, here we are, the card section committee looking forward to having a great year of cards, and tournaments and activities with our members.
There was an email sent out to all members, we have on the cards section database, on 18/1/24. If you did not receive it, please let Cheryl Gianelly or Alan Shears know, to include for any future email notices.
This gave details of some things happening initially, including our start up Fun Night on Thurs 1st February.
As I continually advise in my previous magazine reports, The Euchre /Cards Section has their notice board,on the right just under stairwell, as you walk into the Legends Main Bar. Notices and dates of activities are all put up for everyone to read, and keep up to date.
So whats happening next…
Thursday 1st Feb, report by 6.45pm, cost $10, in Glassworks Room, (go through the Chalmers Restaurant to the end). This is a fun night, we play eight games of Bingo for prizes, and then six games of Euchre. We have Happy Hour drinks and supper to finish off the evening, all before 9.30pm. This event is open to all members, and any club members thinking they may wish to join our card section.
Our normal Euchre/Cards progressive night then starts from Thursday 8 February, and on 15th and 22nd .End of month Pairs night on 29 February.
On Sunday 10 March, Hornby is hosting the 36th South Island Euchre Pairs Tournament, where we will have approx 18 clubs of eight per team, from around the South Island competing on the day. We would really appreciate some help on the day from any members who are able to give their time. Please advise Cheryl Gianelly.
To finish off…
We are always happy to have new members come and join us. Check our Notice Board, and come along when it suits, even just to have a look. But it is best that you know the concept of playing Euchre prior, to make it easier for yourself..
