December 2022 Euchre / Cards Update

Friday 2 Dec, 2022

Hi Members,

What can I say, my last magazine report for 2022, for our Euchre/Card Section, as Christmas comes closer. I hope you have all enjoyed my reports each month and the photos that I take, at any chance, at our card nights and at in-house card activities.

We have had lots going on within our section over the last month.

Thursday 27 October. Pairs night. Last Thursday of October. We had a great turnout of 12 tables (25 pairs). As always, it was a fun atmosphere amongst the competition of players. The winning pair on the night were Malcolm Cole and Julie Cockburn, scoring an impressive 22 pts out of possible 24pts. Runners up were James and Anne Kavanagh on 19pts.

Thursday 3 November. For a change, we held a six handed night, instead of normal progressive. With pre-notice we had given to everyone, most members had pre-sorted their teams of three. We had 14 teams of three players, a good number participating on this night against each other team. Being a special night, our section provided sandwiches, and savouries, plus our usual coffee, tea at our half time break, for our members to enjoy. We played 10 games, with the winners on the night being, Janne Mayo, Diane Findlay, Marleen Troon, on 16 pts. We had three other teams back on 14 pts, equal, close scores.

Thursday 10 November. Our next Thursday night, another new concept of different night of cards we played a ” compulsory pick up night”. We had eight tables of 32 players. That meant if dealer wasn’t ordered up, then they would have to pick up card as trumps regardless, hoping their partner could help them to get three tricks with the opposition wanting the euchre. Lots of unusual play by opposition, to euchre them.

We finished off this night with three equal winners, on 16pts, Sherlee Gray, Michael Gray, and Diane Heath. We will do another compulsory night next year.

Thursday 17 November. We had Normal Progressive Night. with 31 players. Thursday 24 November. Pairs night. We had our final pairs night for the last Thursday of November. We had 11 tables, 44 members (22 pairs) which was good. The winning pair on the night on 19pts, was Jimmy Patu and Trevor Tubman. Coming in second on 16pts, was Anne Hepburn and Bev Bulmer.

Thursday 1 December. We finish off officially our Card Section nights with our Hamper Night and our combined Christmas Function

We will start off the night with a presentation of our four main trophies. The Winter Tournament Shield started back in August amongst 16 pairs, divided into four sections, getting through to semi-finals and finals. The winners
this year (2nd year in row) were Kevin and Trish Cole, with runners up being, Lorraine Cole and Diane Heath, with 3rd equal , Diane Findlay and Sharon Smith, and Gwen Kirk and Chrissy Sheehan.

The Owen Bright Challenge Trophy will be presented by Owens daughter Sandra Winter, to the winning pair of Diane Findlay and Sharon Smith.

This year we arranged for an actual trophy for our “3 handed tournament ” held back in October. This is to be presented to Jimmy Patu, the winner on the day. He still gets his name on our Club Honours Board, upstairs in the Alpine Sports Floor.

The other trophy will be presented by Mary Churchill, last year’s recipient to someone of her choice for a particular reason, which will be announced on the night.

After presentations, we will have finger food for everyone, then start playing the progressive euchre games, with the top 20 scores having choice of Hamper Prizes.

Instead of raffles this year, there will be numerous Hamper Prizes drawn out to members, who get two tickets each arriving on the night for this draw. There will be something organised for the non- card players as well to be part of. Should be a great night to finish off for our Euchre/Card Section for 2022.

Next year, keep free. We have our opening fun night on Thursday 2 February, with cards starting on Thursday 9 February. Please check our Card’s Section Notice Board, under the stairway to Mezzanine Floor, for more details closer to time.

I would just like to mention and thank and show appreciation for the time our card section committee puts in for our card section members. They attend monthly meetings and set up every Thursday night prior to our card nights from 6.30pm and then put everything away at end of night. Thank You!!

To finish off, on behalf of our committee, we wish all our members a Happy Christmas and all the best for 2023.

Regards,
Lorraine Cole
