Cards Update – March 2026
Sunday 1 Mar, 2026
Our Cards Section is now back in action, playing Euchre every Thursday night. We play downstairs, through the Restaurant, in the GlassWorks Room.
We require all members to be ready to play at 10 to 7pm, finishing at approximately 9.15pm. We mostly play 12 games of progressive euchre (changing partners each game), with other nights being pairs at the end of each month or for a special trophy. All details are on our Programme Sheet, available for everyone to see.
Our first night was 12th Feb with 52 players, great numbers for the first night back. Our winner was Liz Grashion on 20 pts, with four other members close behind on 18 pts.
Our second night, on 19th Feb, again had 52 members. The winner was Julie Cockburn on 19 pts, with Billy Turei and Cheryl Gianelly on 18 pts. We also had the pleasure of presenting Anne Hepburn (a Life Member of the Card Section) with a cupcake and candle to celebrate her 80th birthday.
This week, Thurs 26th, we will be having our first end of month pairs night. We will no doubt get good numbers on the night, as members enjoy the fun and competition amongst the usual pairs.
On Thurs 5th March, we are having an Accumulated Scoring night, which is a different scoring format for a change, but with normal euchre games. I will update results in next month’s magazine.
On Sun 8th March, Oxford Club is hosting the Clubs New Zealand South Island Steinlager Euchre Tournament. We have our team of eight players, four pairs, playing on the day.
Our Card Section 500 group also restarted on Monday 16th Feb at 1pm. We only had 13 players there; we need to increase these numbers if we wish to continue, and may look at other time options.
Our Card Committee also wishes to advise that we will increase our card playing cost by $1 to $5 per euchre night. This cost will help towards our expenses, suppers, special nights, and will cover the weekly presold Lotto Bonus Number that is not being done this year.
On 11th April, the major Interclub Tournament begins. It runs over 15 weeks on Saturday afternoons. This involves three rounds, home and away (by bus), amongst six local clubs in Christchurch, finishing on 8th August. Per team, 26 players, nine pairs for Euchre and four pairs for Crib.
There will be a list on our Thursday night WhiteBoard for those wishing either to play or to fill in on Saturdays. Please let either myself or Helen James know in the next 2 to 3 weeks.
Our Section Notice Board is up to date with all activities within our Card Section, as you go down the hallway through to Legends Bar. We have five new members joining us so far this year, and we look forward to other members coming along too.
Regards
Lorraine Cole
