August 2022 Pool Update

Tuesday 2 Aug, 2022

Hi guys and gals,

Winter is well and truly here now, and I hope you are all keeping warm and dry during all the rain we have had lately.

Last month the National Ladies Pairs & Singles were held at the Manurewa Cosmopolitan Club, and we had four ladies represent Hornby in this event. These four ladies did Hornby proud running third out of 33 clubs in the team’s event. Both pairings of Clare Shanaher & Sherralee Boyce as well as Maxine Soal & Letitia Jackson finished in the top eight out of 45 pairs of ladies.

In the singles there were 90 ladies playing from all over the country and out of the 90 Sherralee & Clare make the last 16 and Letitia made the last eight in the championship event and Maxine made the semi in the trophy. The quality of these ladies up North is second to none, so to get as far as they did was no mean feat and something to be very proud of. The National Masters was also held on the back of the ladies, and we had only three players representing Hornby which were Clare Shanaher, Lee Taylor & Barry Henderson. All qualified in their respective sections but unfortunately, all played and lost their first game in the Championship post section play, which put them into the flight, they then lost their next game putting an end to their tournament.

We have also had the Canterbury Open and Ladies singles just held and Hornby was well represented in all events. In the ladies we had 11 ladies out of 42. We had Sherralee Boyce make the last 16, Letitia Jackson make the last 8 & Corien Simpson make the final, losing to Lousie
Kerr from Kaiapoi. In the Trophy event we had Wendy Carlson take this out over Ria Taylor from Richmond. In the open we had 17 players. Out of the 17 we had Mike Jeffery, Paul Morris, Leo Tafu, Dave Donohoe and Paul Blackler make the last 32 in the Championship. In the Championship flight we had John Gower take this out over Corey Reid. In the Trophy event we had Graham Carr & Richy Whitty make the 1⁄4 finals but unfortunately had to play each other, with Graham coming out on top. Graham then ended up losing his next game to the eventual winner of the Trophy. In August, we have the Allan Cowan Memorial All Grades which again looks to be a huge tournament, so I look forward to reporting on that next time.

Regards,
