August 2023 Cards Update

Wednesday 2 Aug, 2023

Hi to all members,

We are now into August with still those chilly nights upon us, but not long till Spring.

Just to recap from last month…

Our in house Winter Tournament games, with own partner, are progressing. Most of the games being played are in the main Legends Bar.

Hornby members will be used to seeing our card section games played in the Mezzanine Room, upstairs on a Thursday or Saturday. But over
the last few weeks, we have been playing in the “Glassworks” Room, down through the Main Restaurant, which is working out well for all.

We have only three Saturday Euchre/Crib Interclub games to play. In fact, as I am writing this, all the six clubs are close within 2 pts between us. These next three weeks are crucial to maybe winning the final Shield Trophy.

We have now completed our first set of Aggregate Games, over six weeks of play. Let’s go back to the winners and placegetters over the last three nights.

Week 4, Winner Terry McCallum and three-way tie placed, Dave McKay, Janne Mayo and Gina Howden-Winter.

Week 5 Winner, Trish Cole. Week 6 Winner, Russell Reekie.

We have been getting between 40 and 48 players each week for these nights. We can now congratulate all three winners, who tied on 75 points each. They are Tony Bakhos, Jack Jenman and Bernie MacKenzie. Well done to them all for consistently achieving good scores each week. Congratulations also to all those that were close behind in points. We start the second set of Aggregate Games on 10 August.

Back on 20 July, we had our mid winter “Drawn Pairs” night. Another different concept for our members, but one that went really well and was enjoyed by all. At half time,
we had a lovely supper. We had 11 tables, 44 players, which was a good turnout, with spot prizes organised by two of our committee, Bernie and Jackie.

The winners on the night were Allan Shears and Marlene Troon on 17pts, and closely behind, Liz Grashion and Anne Hepburn on 16 pts.

Coming up on Thursday 27 July, we have our end of month “Pairs Night”, i.e. choose your own partner, this event is always enjoyed by all as well.

A reminder to members to keep Saturday 23 September free. We have a bus trip to Ashburton MSA Club, to play cards. We will be leaving Hornby Club at 10.30am, going through to Leeston, to the Crate and Barrell Hotel for a two course lunch meal, then onto Ashburton Club. The cost will be $45.00 per person. Details of names and a due payment date will be on the notice board shortly.

On Sunday 6 August, we have three teams entered for the All Sports “Alan Cole Euchre Tournament”, Our members like this afternoon of Euchre against the other sporting sections.

On 19-20 August, we have a team of 10 going up to Porirua Club, Wellington, to play in the National Singles Tournament. So here’s hoping the cards are on our side. Back in 2021, Porirua hosted as well, with 34 clubs attending, and just under 300 players. I will update next month with the results.

Coming up on Sunday 27 August, Hornby are hosting a six handed tournament, open to all clubs. Hornby Members, please get your team of three together and come and play.

To finish off, card members please note that all information regarding our cards section is on the Card Section Notice Board. It is located under the stairs on the right, as you go into the Legends Bar.

We always welcome new members, so come along and check it out. 7pm every Thursday night. It costs $4, plus extra to buy some raffles.

Until next month, Regards.

Lorraine Cole
