April 2023 Euchre & Cards update

Saturday 1 Apr, 2023

Hi to all members,

Here we are now coming into April with days going way too quick. Within our card section, our committee continue to have so many different card activities organised for our card members to enjoy.

Going back to early March, we started with Hornby hosting a Sunday Six Handed Tournament open to all clubs. We were pleased to have 66 players and 11 tables playing on the day. On final scores, after playing 14 games, the winners were Hornby own, Jimmy Patu, Murray Bennie and Trevor Tubman on 21 pts. Second place so close, on 20 pts, also Hornby, Terry McCallum, Possum Jackson and Rowdy Houghton. By all accounts everyone had a good afternoon playing 6 handed with a cup of tea/ coffee and biscuits.

Then, on that following Thursday night, we did our own in-house members playing 6 handed games amongst ourselves with three players per team. Another fun night, with a different aspect to normal progressive games. We had 54 players, nine tables and the winners again: Jimmy Patu, Murray Bennie and Trevor Tubman on 20 pts. Second equal tie on 18pts, between Maurice Adler, Dave and Fran Goulden and Gina Howden-Winter, Lesley Bulman and Anne Kavanagh. We will have another such night later in the year.

On Sunday 12, we had a team play in the Clubs NZ South Island Steinlager Cup Tournament. This year it was hosted by Kaiapoi Club. There were 16 clubs (128 players) from all around South Island, down from Oamaru, up to Nelson, across to Hokitika. A great turnout by all Clubs throughout. We played 18 games prior to lunch, had an awesome full lunch served to us, then after lunch, played another 18 games, finishing at 4.30pm. It is a full- on day playing all these games. The winning team on the day was Oxford for the third year in row, and the winning pair were from Kaiapoi. Our Hornby scores were all favourable too, but you have to get the cards on the day to keep up. Well done to Kaiapoi Card Section and their members, who ran a very organised tournament on the day.

Next year, on 9 and 10 March 2024, Hornby are hosting this tournament, and would appreciate all card members especially, and any Hornby Club members to put forward your names, let us know, to help us out, prior to and on the two days. We will also be looking for any sponsorship that we can source for this tournament weekend.

On Thursday 23, we had a special night. The ‘Eric Pycroft Trophy’ recognises Eric, known as Compost in house. He was a card member and involved with other sections as well, from many years ago. This night has always been based on mens vs ladies in progressive mode, not same pairs. We have been playing this tournament in our card section, one night every year since 1988, 35 years ago. Some of us have been card members playing this tournament for a long time here, me included !!. It is always a good fun night with ladies and men’s combining playing against
each other, and then collating the scores for each in total at the end of the night. We had 10 tables of men and ladies, only needed two extra ladies to match the men numbers. We had supper at half time, which is always enjoyed by all. We did a tally of scores at the end with Men 201 and Ladies 219, so this year the Ladies name is on the trophy. Well done ladies. We will take the WIN. We took a photo of the ladies that waited for the final result after pay out of prizes, many had already gone home.

Finishing off the last Thursday 30 March was our ever popular ‘Pairs Night’, that everyone looks forward to. I will be able to give an update on this night, in next month’s magazine.

Coming up in April on Thursday 6 is our normal progressive night. While on Thursday 13 it is accumulative scoring, based on all your total points over the entire night of 12 games.

On 20 APRIL it is our ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. Please keep this night free. Two weeks prior, there will be the list of nominations for positions and committee to go up. We would definitely like some more members to join the committee, as long as you are committed to help set up prior on Thursday nights and pack up and any other activities or jobs that need to be done. There is so few of us that give our own time to organising and running the card section activities, attending monthly meetings, Sat cards etc, and then a small few of those that do nothing, and give back bad feedback…so this is your chance..

To finish off, we welcome new club members to come and join to play with us in the Euchre Cards Section. Come upstairs by 6.45pm each Thursday night.

Reminder, our Card section notice board for all information, what’s happening etc, is under the stairwell on the right, as you go into The Legends Bar.

Until next time..

Regards.
