September 2021 Cribbage Update

Friday 3 Sep, 2021

Kia ora and hello,

It’s with sad news that I must start the letter today with the passing of Val Giddens. Val was a valued member of the Crib Section, a pillar, and the foundation of our Section. Val devoted much of her time on our committee and as a member over the years. She helped organise our Sunday tournaments and was also Secretary and Treasurer for 30 years. She only recently resigned from these positions. Val represented the Hornby Club at many South Island and National Tournaments. She also helped sell raffles on our All Sports nights while we all enjoyed ourselves, she was always helping out wherever possible. Val liked to watch and talk rugby including the Crusaders and All Blacks. She loved a good joke, especially the dirty ones. However, her absolute passion was cards. Val’s smile and laughter brought joy to many around her. Even in her 90s, she was competitive and as sharp as a knife, there was no pulling the wool over her eyes, trust me I tried!! Her presence will be sorely missed and has left a hole of which I’m confident will never be filled. A giant totara has fallen, gone but never forgotten. God bless Val, I’m sure you’ll be having a wine smiling, watching over us. Our thoughts go out to Sharon and Gemma and
the family.

Sadly, we have had another past member, Maureen Talbot, who moved to Nelson but kept playing, also pass away. Once again, our sincere condolences go out to her family.

We have just played the Charlie Gibson Trophy which was won by Russel (at right). In second was Terry Rush Ridge and in third was James Kavanagh. Congratulations to those players.

We won’t be back playing crib until we come back down to Alert Level 1.

As we’re in lockdown, I would like to just say, stay positive, we’ve been here before. Please stay safe, keep connected with those close by phone or email. I look forward to seeing everyone again once we get back.

Kia kaha

Thanks,
